JOHN DEERE: 100 Employees Laid-Off
News

Officials from John Deere Des Moines works in Ankeny said the company laid off 100 employees this week.

On Friday, the company told the employees that would be placed on indefinite layoff in early November.

John Deere released a statement about the layoffs, saying they were necessary to remain competitive overall.  The company needed to adjust the size of its manufacturing workforce to meet market demand for products, according to the company’s statement.

The layoffs were planned in line with the financial forecast Deere & Company made in August and is not indicative of new market information.  The statement also said that the layoffs affect production employees and not skilled trade workers.

John Deere officials said the company warned workers this summer about the pending layoffs in the fall.  Last month, the company laid-off 40 other employees.

An Ankeny City Councilman said he isn’t concerned with the town’s economy right now, he’s thinking about the employees.

“I think Deere has the capability of turning it around and hopefully getting these people back to work fairly quickly.  Not only those that live in Ankeny but those that live in our other communities,” said Councilman Jim McKenna.

John Deere is one of Ankeny’s largest employers with 1,300 workers.
