FALSE RECORDS: Man Fakes Military Record To Get VA Benefits | News
An Altoona man will serve time in federal prison for lying about his military record to get veteran’s health care benefits.
A judge sentenced 53-year-old Jeffery Kepler to one year in prison and 3 years of probation for health care fraud.
Reports show Kepler received over $100,000 in VA health care benefits that he was not eligible for over a three year period. Kepler was caught when he tried to obtain VA disability benefits that he was also not entitled too.
Kepler did serve in the U.S. Army, but only for 27 days before being honorably discharged for not meeting medical fitness standards. In the documents he falsified Kepler claimed to have served for nearly 3 years, earning numerous honors including two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
He also admitted to collecting military memorabilia in order to falsely represent himself. Kepler had to forfeit those items as part of his plea.
